Chapter 11

Devin woke with a start, then he pushed at whoever was touching him. A strong, large hand moved up and down his back. Panic threatened to blind him, and he brought his elbow up to ram into the person.

“Shh…”

Devin froze. Mars. He looked around. The room was dark, the soft glow of the lamps on the driveway only illuminating the window frames, not much else.

“I didn’t know when you wanted to get up, but it’s six o’clock. Hanna will want breakfast soon.”

“Fuck.”

“No time, I’m afraid.” Mars caressed his shoulder, and Devin slapped his hand away for good measure.

“I didn’t mean…”

Mars chuckled.

“Oh God, you’re in a good mood in the morning? That’s just wrong, man.” Though it made Devin smile. He’d slept. For hours. He could kiss Mars for staying with him, though morning breath. Eww, not a good idea.

“Why are you scrunching your face?”

“How well do you see in the dark?”

Mars shrugged. “Better than you.”

“Yeah, I’ve already figured that out. I’ll take a quick shower and head down to the kitchen.” He rolled out of bed. “I…eh…If you want to sleep some more, you can. I mean, I’ll be out of here in a few minutes.”

“I’ll go grab a shirt and walk down with you.”

Devin nodded, fetched clothes from the wardrobe, and rushed into the bathroom. Ten minutes later, he emerged freshly showered and fully dressed. When he exited his room, he bit back a yelp. Mars was leaning against the wall, scrolling on his phone. His eyebrows sleepily climbed his forehead as he met Devin’s gaze.

“Wasn’t expecting you.”

“I said I’d walk down with you, didn’t I?”

He had, but…“Let’s go.”

“After you, good sir.”

Devin snorted but walked down the stairs.

“Love your ass in those jeans.”

“Shut up. People are trying to sleep.”

“Only saying.”

“Yeah, yeah, I’m sure they’re pleased to hear.”

When Mars snorted, Devin did his best not to grin. Damn, he felt good. He’d slept. For hours. Uninterrupted.

Walking into the kitchen, he turned the oven on and brought the bread out of the refrigerator. Then he put the coffee on and grabbed a skillet for the bacon.

“How can you do so many things at once?”

Devin turned in time to see him grab a chair and sit by the kitchen island in the same spot as he had the day before. “What do you mean? I only do one thing at a time.”

“No. You’re baking bread, making coffee, and something with a skillet.”

Devin narrowed his eyes. “I turn the oven on, then I put the coffee on, then I grabbed the skillet. It’s one thing after the other.”

“They’re all ongoing.”

“You want me to wait until the bread is done before I put the coffee on? That’s insane, Mars.”

He scowled. “No, but you’ll burn something when you have too many things going at once.”

Devin chuckled, grabbed a bag of M&Ms, and poured it into a bowl he placed in front of Mars. “Here, have some sweets, and don’t worry your pretty little head.” He grabbed a cup and poured a cup of coffee before it was done.
