Chapter 11
Devin woke with a start, then he pushed at whoever was touching him. A strong, large hand moved up and down his back. Panic threatened to blind him, and he brought his elbow up to ram into the person.
âShhâ¦â
Devin froze. Mars. He looked around. The room was dark, the soft glow of the lamps on the driveway only illuminating the window frames, not much else.
âI didnât know when you wanted to get up, but itâs six oâclock. Hanna will want breakfast soon.â
âFuck.â
âNo time, Iâm afraid.â Mars caressed his shoulder, and Devin slapped his hand away for good measure.
âI didnât meanâ¦â
Mars chuckled.
âOh God, youâre in a good mood in the morning? Thatâs just wrong, man.â Though it made Devin smile. Heâd slept. For hours. He could kiss Mars for staying with him, though morning breath. Eww, not a good idea.
âWhy are you scrunching your face?â
âHow well do you see in the dark?â
Mars shrugged. âBetter than you.â
âYeah, Iâve already figured that out. Iâll take a quick shower and head down to the kitchen.â He rolled out of bed. âIâ¦ehâ¦If you want to sleep some more, you can. I mean, Iâll be out of here in a few minutes.â
âIâll go grab a shirt and walk down with you.â
Devin nodded, fetched clothes from the wardrobe, and rushed into the bathroom. Ten minutes later, he emerged freshly showered and fully dressed. When he exited his room, he bit back a yelp. Mars was leaning against the wall, scrolling on his phone. His eyebrows sleepily climbed his forehead as he met Devinâs gaze.
âWasnât expecting you.â
âI said Iâd walk down with you, didnât I?â
He had, butâ¦âLetâs go.â
âAfter you, good sir.â
Devin snorted but walked down the stairs.
âLove your ass in those jeans.â
âShut up. People are trying to sleep.â
âOnly saying.â
âYeah, yeah, Iâm sure theyâre pleased to hear.â
When Mars snorted, Devin did his best not to grin. Damn, he felt good. Heâd slept. For hours. Uninterrupted.
Walking into the kitchen, he turned the oven on and brought the bread out of the refrigerator. Then he put the coffee on and grabbed a skillet for the bacon.
âHow can you do so many things at once?â
Devin turned in time to see him grab a chair and sit by the kitchen island in the same spot as he had the day before. âWhat do you mean? I only do one thing at a time.â
âNo. Youâre baking bread, making coffee, and something with a skillet.â
Devin narrowed his eyes. âI turn the oven on, then I put the coffee on, then I grabbed the skillet. Itâs one thing after the other.â
âTheyâre all ongoing.â
âYou want me to wait until the bread is done before I put the coffee on? Thatâs insane, Mars.â
He scowled. âNo, but youâll burn something when you have too many things going at once.â
Devin chuckled, grabbed a bag of M&Ms, and poured it into a bowl he placed in front of Mars. âHere, have some sweets, and donât worry your pretty little head.â He grabbed a cup and poured a cup of coffee before it was done.
